New bill to give local authorities digital planning powers with open data

The Queen’s Speech has announced the launch of the Levelling Up and Regeneration Bill that plans to give local authorities in England and Wales digital planning powers based on open data.

Indeed, the legislation aims to give residents more involvement in local development and set consistent data standards. In order to do so, data will need to be available and free of charge and authorities will have to use approved planning software to support a modern and data-driven planning system.

This new system will then give people the opportunity to engage with and to better understand the benefits involved with proposed developments in local areas. By doing so, the UK government will be able to evaluate data more rigorously while residents will judge the efficiency of the programmes and policies.
