Will AI impact testing jobs?

Software Testing News recently collaborated with Deepak Goel, who is a seasoned Senior IT professional with over 17 years of extensive experience in quality assurance and software testing. He has been currently working with Microsoft to utilise his expertise in Project, Program & Delivery Management, Software Quality Assurance, Testing, and Operations Management. His recent article talks about how Artificial Intelligence will impact testing jobs. Read below for the full interview.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionise the field of software testing. Contrary to the belief that AI will decrease the number of testing jobs, the reality is quite different. In fact, AI will create new opportunities and elevate the standards for testers. Let’s delve into the specifics:

  1. AI-Assisted Testers: The future will favour AI-assisted testers—professionals who leverage AI tools to enhance their productivity and efficiency. These individuals are likely to enjoy greater job stability, career growth, and rewards. Their role will involve collaborating with AI systems to optimise testing processes, analyse results, and identify patterns.
  2. Changing Skill Requirements: Basic testing tasks, such as creating extensive tests based on requirements, will become less critical. The market will shift its focus toward experienced testers who excel in complex, high-level thinking. Expertise in testing and ensuring the reliability of AI systems (especially General AI) will be highly valued. Despite AI’s progress, it remains susceptible to errors, necessitating skilled human intervention.
  3. The Third Wave of Change: AI-Driven Development and Testing: Some organisations are experimenting with AI independently developing and testing applications from scratch. The effectiveness, cost-efficiency, and quality outcomes of this approach are still uncertain. Will these endeavors deliver concrete benefits, or will they require human intervention to address shortcomings? Only time will tell.
  4. Embracing Change: AI is reshaping the Quality Assurance (QA) industry. The choice lies with testers: either disregard the inevitable changes or embrace them. Your decision will significantly impact your career trajectory, job security, and compensation.

In summary, AI’s influence on testing is profound. Whether you view it as an opportunity or a challenge, adapting to this transformation is essential for securing your place in the future of testing.
